On 1 September 1919 the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Latvia established the State Statistical Office, adopted the interim regulations on its activity and appointed Marìeris Skujenieks as its director, under whose guidance the office functioned until the year of 1940.

A principle of strong centralisation was laid at the basis of Latvia’s statistics.

In the subsequent years 7 sections were established – demographic, agricultural, general, industrial, foreign trade, domestic trades, as well as price and labour statistics sections.

Alongside with everyday statistical work the office conducted many general censuses.

The Central Statistical Office of the LSSR established after the World War II (since 1987 – the State Committee on Statistics) functioned within the structure of the corresponding organisation of the SSSR. Under the conditions of planned economy the methodology of statistical works, the methods of data collection and processing were strongly centralised and regulated.

After the retrieval of sovereignty the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia (till 1998 - the State Committee on Statistics) started to develop the statistical system on a new basis that was determined by the transition of the country to a market economy. Since August 1998 the President of the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia is Aija Zigure.
